Addition
What is Addition?
Addition is one of the four fundamental operations in mathematics. It is the process of combining two or more quantities to find a total, called the sum. The symbol for addition is + and the result is written after an equals sign.
For example: 3 + 5 = 8. Here, 3 and 5 are called addends and 8 is the sum.
Addition underpins almost every area of maths โ from counting change to solving algebraic equations โ so building a strong foundation is essential before moving to more complex topics.
Key Properties of Addition
Understanding the rules that govern addition helps you work faster and more flexibly.
Commutative Property โ the order of addends does not change the sum:
- 7 + 4 = 4 + 7 = 11
Associative Property โ when adding three or more numbers, the grouping does not matter:
- (2 + 3) + 5 = 2 + (3 + 5) = 10
Identity Property โ adding zero to any number leaves it unchanged:
- 9 + 0 = 9
These properties are especially useful when you rearrange numbers to make mental calculations easier.
Place Value and Column Addition
When adding multi-digit numbers, aligning digits by place value is critical. Each column โ ones, tens, hundreds, thousands โ must line up before you add.
Example: 346 + 528
Work column by column from right to left:
- Ones: 6 + 8 = 14 โ write 4, carry 1
- Tens: 4 + 2 + 1 = 7
- Hundreds: 3 + 5 = 8
Result: 874
Always write digits neatly in their correct columns to avoid place-value errors.
Column Addition with Carrying
Carrying (also called regrouping) happens when the sum of digits in a column is 10 or more. The tens digit is "carried" to the next column on the left.
Worked example: 5,289 + 3,764
- Ones: 9 + 4 = 13 โ write 3, carry 1
- Tens: 8 + 6 + 1 = 15 โ write 5, carry 1
- Hundreds: 2 + 7 + 1 = 10 โ write 0, carry 1
- Thousands: 5 + 3 + 1 = 9
Answer: 9,053
Practice writing out the carry digit above the next column clearly to avoid losing track.
Mental Addition Strategies
For quick calculations without pen and paper, three strategies are particularly powerful:
1. Partitioning โ split numbers into tens and ones, add separately, then recombine:
- 64 + 37 = (60 + 30) + (4 + 7) = 90 + 11 = 101
2. Compensation โ round one number to a convenient value, add, then adjust:
- 68 + 29 โ 68 + 30 = 98, then subtract 1 โ 97
3. Counting On โ start from the larger number and count up by the smaller:
- 45 + 8: start at 45, count 8 more โ 53
Practice switching between strategies depending on which numbers you are working with.
Key Terms
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Addend | Any number being added |
| Sum | The result of addition |
| Carry | A digit moved to the next column when a column total is 10 or more |
| Commutative | Order does not affect the result |
| Associative | Grouping does not affect the result |
| Partitioning | Breaking a number into its place-value parts |
| Compensation | Rounding then adjusting to correct the estimate |
Adding Decimals
Adding decimals follows the same column method, but you must align the decimal points first. Add trailing zeros as placeholders so both numbers have the same number of decimal places.
Example: 3.75 + 1.6
Write 1.6 as 1.60, then add column by column:
- Hundredths: 5 + 0 = 5
- Tenths: 7 + 6 = 13 โ write 3, carry 1
- Ones: 3 + 1 + 1 = 5
Answer: 5.35
Adding Negative Numbers
Adding a negative number is equivalent to subtracting its positive value:
- 8 + (-3) = 8 - 3 = 5
- -4 + (-6) = -(4 + 6) = -10
Think of a number line: adding a positive moves you right; adding a negative moves you left. This concept becomes important when working with directed numbers and algebra.
Word Problems
Word problems test whether you can identify when addition is needed and set up the calculation correctly.
Example: A school library has 1,456 fiction books and 2,389 non-fiction books. How many books are there in total?
1,456 + 2,389 = 3,845
Key words that signal addition: total, altogether, combined, sum, in all, more than, increased by.
Always re-read the question after solving to check you answered exactly what was asked.
Common Mistakes
- Misaligning columns โ always line up place values carefully (ones under ones, tens under tens).
- Forgetting to carry โ when a column sum is 10 or more, the tens digit must move to the next column.
- Decimal point errors โ never add decimals without aligning the decimal points first.
- Skipping the adjustment in compensation โ if you added too much, you must subtract the extra.
- Misreading word problems โ watch out for words like "difference" (subtraction) that can be confused with addition cues.
Tips and Tricks
- Check by reversing: if 346 + 528 = 874, then 874 - 528 should equal 346.
- Estimate first: round each number to the nearest 10 or 100 to predict a ballpark answer before calculating.
- Pair to make 10 or 100: when adding a list of numbers, scan for pairs that sum neatly (e.g. 7 + 3, 45 + 55).
- Use the commutative property: always add the larger number first when counting on โ it is faster.
